Lesson 13 of 15

Duration: 2:59 [Watch on YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqLf_mmfI5I)

## In this lesson

Roy uses Total Commander's built-in FTP client to open a new connection to the GNU FTP site, browses it like a local file list and downloads the latest release of Nano with F5. He goes into the downloaded tar.gz file, views a file on the server with F3 (which downloads it to a cache), disconnects with Ctrl-Shift-F and saves the connection for later. He also mentions other network features, such as network connections, sharing directories and showing the admin shares.

[\[00:03\]](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqLf_mmfI5I&t=3s) One of the things you might want to do with files is to use an FTP server to transfer them from one place to another. Luckily, Total Commander already includes a built-in FTP client to access servers. To demonstrate this, you can either click net and then FTP connect or FTP new connection. FTP new connection means just give it a URL. let's say the GNU FTP URL. GNU is the open source project for many different tools.

[\[00:35\]](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqLf_mmfI5I&t=35s) And once you're there, you basically are browsing through a standard list of files as if they're local to you, but the list says FTP. So, let's say I want to download Nano. So, Nano, I can download the latest release of Nano and copy that with F5 just like I do with a normal file. And it downloads.

[\[01:05\]](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqLf_mmfI5I&t=65s) And now I can go to the file which is a tar gz. And since this is a total commander, I it already supports tar and gz. And I can just click enter type enter to go into the file, go into the sources, view something locally, etc. In fact, I can even view something locally just by clicking F3 on something in the FTP. So now I'm in the FTP side here.

[\[01:35\]](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqLf_mmfI5I&t=95s) Going to click F3 on something like this. So it's going to download it locally to a cache and do a viewer on this stuff. Now if I want to disconnect I can just click disconnect here I can change the transfer mode here but the shortcut is control shift F to disconnect and since this is not saved I can save the connection for the future to say let's call it GNU and just use anonymous for now and I don't want to always have the nano dear here when I log in so this should be okay and from this moment on if I wanted to connect to something.

[\[02:13\]](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqLf_mmfI5I&t=133s) I can go to FTP new connection or FTP connect F and I can just click new and connect to it. And let's see if there's anything special other we can show hidden files on FTP. We can do port connections to other PC if we have cables to other PCs. But basically, Total Commander does a lot of network stuff very very nicely. For example, network connections, disconnecting and sharing directories,

[\[02:48\]](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqLf_mmfI5I&t=168s) Show all the admin shares on my local directories. So, a lot of stuff that you have to click through a lot of different dialogues is very easy to do through this tool.
